CRUISE CONNECTION by ROCKY & PEGGY

Hello Everyone ...Rocky and Peggy Alby here! Like all of you, we are very excited to journey this cruise adventure and of course counting the days to head to the airport. But before we go and talk about that. Diana wanted us to share how we are connected. Peggy and I’ve known Diana since we were kids, specifically we knew each other from our growing up days in Sonoma. Peggy has known her since fourth grade and I’ve known her since 8th grade. As for Roger, we began our friendship when we went to their wedding in Maui in 1990. So, if you want to know the real story, I’m sure I can recall a few, especially if you bought me a drink on board the Diamond Princess. Another drink or three and well... I might make it worth your while, heh, heh!

On a more serious note, we are thrilled to be able to finally join Roger and Diana. As Peggy and I have been retired a few years now. I had a career in the Public Safety field and Peggy was in the Respiratory  Services  arena. Both of these work schedule as you can imagine made it difficult to join the Davis‘ in all of their many adventures. But, we are finally c’mon onboard.

Peggy and I are also connected with Peggy’s sister Lucy Working and her husband John who are also joining us on this 32 day cruise. Additionally we have friends Cristin George and Mike Thompson also coming aboard as well.

Both Peggy and I have cruised before and enjoy this mode of travel. Some of the other places we have cruised to are Panama Canal on the Island Princess, Alaska on the Holland Cruise Line and most recently Viking River Cruise, Budapest to Amsterdam.

Yes, life is good and we are ready to embark on this exotic adventure from Bangkok to Anchorage. Oh and by the way, we are ready to play Progressive Rummy so c’mon lucky mojo! See you onboard soon.....

CRUISE CONNECTION by JOHN & LUCY

Hello Fellow Cruisers,
We are John and Lucy Working and we live in Vacaville between the Bay Area and Sacramento in Northern California. Lucy is a retired kindergarten/second grade teacher while I'm retired after managing a college bookstore at Solano Community College and then Sacramento City College. Lucy's sister is Peggy Alby and we have taken three cruises with her and her husband, Rocky over the years. We know Diana through Peggy and met Roger a few times in Sonoma and Las Vegas. The first time I met Roger he was wearing his T-Shirt "I Buy Japanese Swords". I have a Japanese sword and thinking (hoping) it might be worth something I asked Roger to take a look. Well let's just say we are not paying for any of our cruises with the proceeds.

Our most recent cruise was aboard Viking River Cruises. We sailed from Budapest on the Danube to Amsterdam on the Rhine. If you've not taken a river cruise we highly recommend it. There were just 145 people aboard and at each stop there was a walking/bus tour included. Viking provided a local guide with wireless head set.  We've done the Panama Canal and Alaska so I guess we're becoming "experienced cruisers". This will be our second cruise with Princess.

My personal interest in this cruise, beside the fact that Peggy and Rocky are going, is I spent some time off the coast of Vietnam and in the Mekong River Delta during the late sixties and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to see Vietnam again under different circumstances. During that time I also visited Hong Kong and Tokyo and could not resist this opportunity to return. As a plus we get to visit other parts of China as well. Lucy and I were both history majors at San Jose State, taking numerous Asian History Classes, so it will be fun to be there.

We are both looking forward to this trip and look forward to meeting you all.

CRUISE CONNECTION by WENDY BROWN

Both Kelly Feldman and I have a long history with Roger and Diana. Kelly and I both work for the City of Irvine where we started our careers at a very young age. There we were mentored by our 3 “Fairy God Mothers” Diana, Stella, and Cindy. These amazing women took us both under their wings, welcomed us into their sisterhood and have been looking out for us ever since. The City is our extended family. It has truly been more than just a job for all of us. Thru the City, we have made lifelong friendships. So it has not taken much convincing for us to join the Roger and Diana celebrations. Plus who can pass up the “Roger”, “Randy” and “Russ” entertainment and Kelly loves the gambling and card games.
Many years ago, Diana was sharing with me that she was looking for a travel agent to help her plan a “Caribbean Cruise” celebration. I shared with her that my family has been using an amazing travel agent that had quickly become a friend and agent to many of our extended family members and friends. I knew from the get-go that Alex and Diana would be a match made in Heaven. 10+ years later, Alex and Ted has become a permanent fixture to the group. Alex has been responsible for planning many memories and adventures for me and my family for years. (Wild Adventures for me and my friends, Dream 25 Year Anniversary trip for my parents, and the perfect Honeymoon for my brother are just to name a few). Now I am so happy to see the memories and friendships you have all been a part of with Alex and Ted as well. My Dad always told me that he was ok with me traveling all over the world, if Alex was planning it. He always knew she would take care of me and my friends.
I have been lucky to have one of my best friends Diane join me for the “Caribbean” and “Mediterranean” adventures. Diane was not fortunate enough to get 3 weeks off from her employer to join us for “Asia”. She will be missed and I will make sure to bring her back some good stories and fun prizes.  We both had so much fun on the “Roger & Diana” trips that we made sure to bring friends to future trips. We were able to quickly sell Kelly on the “Mediterranean” trip. She is now hooked and will be my “roomie” for Asia. Kelly and I have traveled together many times over the past 15 years and I am sure that Asia will be just as action packed and adventurous. Look out “Asia”…. Here We Come!!!!!
Both Kelly and I cannot thank Roger and Diana for all of their love and support of both of us over the years. We are so blessed to have such amazing people in our lives. We are so happy to be a part of the Asia group this year. You are always guaranteed a perfectly planned vacation, lots of fun adventures and activities, and good friends. Cruising is a perfect way to see lots of amazing places while being surrounded by some of your favorite people. Plus the girls who have huge suitcases full of wardrobe changes don’t need to pack and unpack.

Packing with the Eagle Creek Pack-It-System

If you are looking for an alternative way to pack. This Eagle Creek Pack System might be worth looking at. Here is a YouTube Video that this woman packed for her family of four for 6 weeks in this system. I have seen some of these items at the Container Store and I'm sure you can look on-line to see what other places sell them.

If you like it...might be on your wish list for the holidays?

CRUISE CONNECTION ... by STELLA

Stella & Paul in their tent Kangshung (East face of Everest) Trek, Tibet

Just how much water is enough?

There are certain places where I find having lots of water is advantageous. My preferred interaction with water is hiking along a steep mountain pass, sucking up that life giving fluid through my Camelback as I gaze upon mile and miles of incredible high altitude vistas. Second to that is the small metal bowl of hot “washing water” delivered to my tent by sherpas as I marvel at the first rays of light to hit the Himalayan peaks. Why, then, have I cruised twice with Roger and Diana? The answer is simply water. Water is what the barista uses every morning to make the latte I share with Diana. The cruise ship floats on water and on those decks, I enjoy walks with friends, snacks poolside, a foo-foo drink at the bar, extravagant spa splurges and all the hot water I want. Truthfully though, I don’t go just for the endless hot water, although after a record 23 days of not bathing or washing my hair, hot water does, on occasion, enter my dreams.

For those of you that don’t know me, I too am one of those retired government employees receiving an exorbitant pension for what many considered a “piece of cake” job . Fortunately, for 24 years, I had a blast earning that exorbitant pension. Just don’t tell anyone that for most of those 24 years I spent almost every holiday and many evenings and weekends working at special events, shoveling dog poop when staff didn’t show up for shifts, making virgin margaritas for Irvine Seniors and facilitating excursions to introduce Irvinites to the bizarre concept of camping and exploring the natural areas of Southern California.

That love of nature and its challenges draw my husband Paul and me to push reasonable limits a bit when we travel. As I write, we are traveling across the USA in our 21ft travel trailer, exploring not only the well known and famous sites, but also the remote and obscure treasures of this wonderful country. We’re in Texas and there seems to be plenty of water here. The collision of an arctic front and the atmospheric push from a giant storm on the East Coast created torrents of water and a fair share of thunder and lightning prompting me to remark “excuse me Texas, that’s enough water for now, thank you very much.”

I push the envelope by cruising because by day 3 or 4 I’m ready to jump ship. A mega-ship to you is almost prison-like to me. Every surface, except my beloved water, is human-made. But, and I mean a really big but (just like my butt that almost entombed me in a cave in New Zealand by getting stuck), if I don’t cruise, I can’t vacation with Diana. I can’t get her to join me on our 500 mile Cycle Oregon bike ride or trek with me in the Andes or Himalayas and it’s not because she doesn’t enjoy the outdoors. The deal breaker is porta-potties or lack of proper facilities. She won’t use them! Geez, here we are talking about water again. So in order to “vacation” with Diana and Roger (and by the way, can one “vacation” from retirement?), we cruise. This is where I find having lots of water advantageous. Our trip on the Davis’ Mediterranean cruise was part of a mini-grand tour of Europe. We flew in a few weeks early from Bangkok, traveled through France, met the group in Barcelona and then headed to Slovenia and Switzerland. For me, the two weeks on the cruise ship was truly a vacation. And hey, my hair was clean!

And that my friends, brings us to more water and the wonders of the Asia to Alaska cruise. Bangkok is where this journey begins. We’ve traveled to Bangkok several times and each time we discover something new or more accurately, Bangkok delivers more than expected. Our last visit was in the Fall of 2011 during the flood of the century. We spent most of our time on or balancing above water. Bangkok is a logical stopover prior to entering any of the Himalayan gateway cities, so that’s why Paul and I are intimately acquainted with the city. Most of the tiny Himalayan airlines fly out of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

We like two hotels there and one, the Novotel Suvarnbhumi, is adjacent to the airport with easy access to the city centre, excellent rooms and service, an outstanding spa and yummy food. If you book directly through Agoda (right now there were several $132 USD deluxe rooms available) your rooms are less than half price and quite reasonable for Bangkok. For all that you may have been told, Bangkok is not a cheap city. Certainly, the fabulous morning floating market, night market and street vendors provide an opportunity for bargaining, but you won’t getting anything real or cheap there except Rolex watches :-) I bought one for $6USD and my tuk-tuk driver said I paid $2 too much! It lasted through three floods, one month in the Himalaya, Cambodia, Thailand and is still running. Unfortunately, the directions were written on a postage stamp piece of paper which I promptly lost, so now my Rolex is permanently on Tibetan time.

Be prepared for heat and humidity and lots of water in Bangkok. The Chao Phraya river taxi is an incredibly easy and fun way to see some of the sites. You’ll meet locals commuting to or from work and along the way there are several little food courts, simple structures filled with fantastic tidbits of local delicacies you must experience. My favorite time to ride is dusk, savoring an unidentified piece of grilled food product wrapped in greens, drenched in incredible sauce and watching the sun as it sets along the banks of the Chao Phraya with Wat Arun silhouetted against a blazing red sky.

If you have a little extra time, I highly recommend jumping on a plane for a visit to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, but that’s another blog post. Well actually, I must mention, for Roger’s sake, Cambodia is amazingly inexpensive. Nice hotel room with breakfast, $20USD per night. Enough said until next time.

So now I’m once again thinking, just how much water is enough? A month’s worth? 16 days? Well, even if it’s only six ounces in a cup of coffee and those you love and enjoy are around you, then, it is enough, at least for me.

CRUISE CONNECTION ...by PATTY

Hello, my name is Patty Cruz and I just wanted to share some of my experiences and thoughts about cruising with Diana and Roger.

I am also a retiree of City of Irvine and have known Roger and Diana for many years.  I worked in Community Services with Diana for most of my years with Irvine and was given the opportunity a few years ago to join her and Roger on the Mediterranean cruise.  That was my first cruise experience and it was wonderful!  Diana and Roger seem to pick very interesting places to see and manage to visit many interesting ports along the way.  Our first stop was Barcelona Spain and it was spectacular the weather was beautiful and the art and architecture was amazing.  I especially enjoyed the day trips in all of the countries we visited, they were fun, set to an easy going pace, informative and very interesting.  The cruise line for the Mediterranean trip was absolutely top notch and as this Asian cruise is with a different cruise line I am sure it will be top notch as well.  As the days pass I'm getting more and more excited to see what fun is in store aboard the Princess Cruise!

I think one of the best aspects of cruising with Diana and Roger is you can go at your own pace.  If you want to join in with the group you can and if you want to do your own thing that is ok too!  Just a very positive and upbeat group to travel with.  All aspects of the trip are very well organized and many, many fun choices are available for your enjoyment.

I can't wait to set sail in April to enjoy what is in store for us!  If this is your first time cruising with Diana and Roger's group you won't be disappointed.

Welcome Aboard !

Patty

Packing For a LOOOOOONG Cruise

Anxious, Nervous, Concerned ...Panic!!! How do you pack for a 32 day Cruise and not be dressed in style with at least some what of a “fashionista”, have enough luggage to bring all my “gotta have’s” and still not have to spend tons of dollars on baggage fees?

You gotta start by being smart and tough! Know that you will need to bring only the essentials

CRUISE CONNECTION ...By KAREN & BUZZ

Let Us Just Explain....by Buzz and Karen Vaughn
We thought you might be wondering how two seemingly normal, quiet and upstanding people ever fell in with the likes of Roger and his adorable and sweet wife, Diana. You are probably curious about how she got mixed up with him, too, but thatʼs a different article....’er...book! The tale goes back a few years.......
It was 1976 and Roger had just become my boss in the Purchasing Department at the City of Irvine. I know, I know.....I should have immediately sensed something amiss with a man who wore a leisure suit with white patent loafers, a 4” wide white patent belt and had a life size CP3O cardboard figure in his office. Color me....DUH!!
Suffice it to say it was a very interesting 17 years. Yes.....I did this for 17 years - daily!! One of the only other women to surpass this record is Diana, so I suppose we both deserve a little credit for something....not sure what, but something. Funny thing is, I actually knew Diana before Roger in her role with the Cityʼs Parks and Recreation Department. She and I formed a quick and lasting friendship and though she chose to ignore my early warnings about Roger, I will be forever happy that she listened to her heart instead.
So around 1986, Buzz came into my life and he and Roger met through my work shortly after. The good news (I suppose) was they seemed to get along rather well...actually really well.....maybe too well. Do not ask what Buzz gave Roger for his 50th birthday, or what they laughed their heads off about at at friend’s wedding. They can’t remember one and the other is an inside joke, but these two events were harbingers of the future.
The next good news was Buzz had already gotten rid of his polyester leisure suit (and Diana has reported that Roger  finally out grew his) so that was one less worry for both Diana and me. (Although, Laura, our fingers are crossed for you that Dell got rid of his polyester tux so he won’t think of reviving that formal wear from 1995 at Diana and Roger’s Vegas Renewal, yikes!) And the great news was that I told Roger he should surprise Diana and take her on the Coastal Cruise I had planned as a birthday surprise for Buzz and... he agreed!
This was not without some trauma, however. If you know what apoplexy is, you will know how Roger reacted to the $2500 price tag. I cajoled for days and appealed to his purchasing sensibilities in the end....how could he pass up a 7-day package that included 2 people, in a full suite, had free food (magic word), lodging, steward services, transportation, entertainment, many fun stops and the camaraderie of a cruise? He finally wrote the check. So, we surprised them both and the rest has become history....and an expensive thorn in Rogerʼs side, but a very beloved and fun one, too. (Right, Rog’?)
Since that first cruise together....where Diana and I discovered we really love the pampered life more than we thought (sorry Stella) and shared a passion for food and travel (guess youʼve noticed that)....we were hooked. Seems the menfolk were hooked as well! Could have been the spa treatments, comfy bars, cocktails & card games or the dancing girls or the food, or maybe the fact that they could travel without lugging suitcases hither and yon, didnʼt have to pack and unpack to see many cities and sights or that there were plenty of places to imbibe. Probably for all those reasons and certainly several others, cruising worked itʼs magic and we have been on many wonderful journeys together over the years.
But knowing the Davis’ isnʼt just about cruising. Itʼs about friendship and the people along the way. They include everyone with open arms and warmth. You cannot be unhappy in their presence. Diana, being the adorable, sweet woman that she is, and having a background in Recreation & Leisure Services, takes the game to an entirely new level, too.
Beginning with their wedding in Maui in 1990 and renewal ceremonies every 5 years in places like Vegas 1995, Re-Mauiʼd in Maui 2000, a Caribbean cruise 2005 and Cancun/ Mayan Riviera 2010, Diana and Roger have opened their travels and adventures to their expanding group of friends and loved ones. Subsequent cruises have found many of us together in China, the Mediterranean, Baja, the Mexican Riviera and soon the exciting Asia to Alaska cruise in 2013.
Each of these adventures has let us make new friends, renew old friendships, see wonderful sights and experience much of the world together. Along with their hosted cocktail events, commemorative tee shirts and goodies, we have also received wonderful discounts, upgrades or credits with our group packages. Diana and Roger always make sure their guests get the most cluck for their buck, and thanks to the efforts of Alex Kuncio, our dedicated travel agent, we have achieved some very special treatment. Her arrangements for our overnight in Rome were exceptional. The post cruise stay in Venice was sublime.
Then Diana tops it off with things like arranging group photos, pre-cruise luncheons (donʼt miss this event on March 2) and creating the Roger and Dianaʼs Cruise Blog. A lifelong learner, Diana has picked up the Blogging bug quite nicely. Her articles are always interesting, pertinent (Russell - read them please) and provide so much information that make your travels smooth and carefree. Be sure you donʼt miss any of her issues....they are really packed with great stuff.
And that my friends, is how we got mixed up in the best times of our lives. Who knew white patent shoes would prove to be like Ruby Slippers instead, but click your heels and you too will have a fabulous time. If you are new to the group, Welcome, and prepare to fasten your seat belts. Itʼs a wonderful ride, with marvelous people and amazing sights. The friendships we have made and the places we have been fill our hearts immensely and our photo books for a lifetime. Bon Voyage and see you all sooner than you think!! And many thanks to Roger and Diana. We love you!!

CRUISE CONNECTION SERIES ...Intro by Diana

Calling all guest writers from this upcoming 2013 Asia to Alaska Cruise... don’t be alarmed, surprised or shocked if in your email inbox you find a invitation to be a guest writer for this upcoming blog article series.

I wanted to do something different and ask our guests to write an article about how they heard about this cruise, what prompted them to want to go, what are they looking forward to. I also wanted to take this opportunity for our writers to introduce themselves to the group and share their cruise experience which may or may not include past trips with the Davis‘ as well as their interest and passion for travel.

The article is pretty much in the hands of the guest writer. You can be creative, matter of fact or humorous! The article has no length limits, so short couple of paragraphs or pour your heart out and write a novella. You can personalize it and share stories of fellow cruisers  (as long as you are “nice”, remember what your mother taught you?) or keep it simple and share what you know best...yourself and your passion for cruising, traveling or friendships.

Want to give a shout out thanks to Jo Mary for being our first guest writers as well as to Karen & Buzz Vaughn, Scott & Liddy Paulsen, Linda Spacil, Cristin George and my hubby Roger who quickly responded with a of course I can help! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you....oh by the way Jo Mary, Michael, Karen, Buzz, Scott & Liddy are all returnees to our group. And Linda and Cristin are our new friends which I look forward to officially meeting them soon. So Welcome Aboard and thanks for your help in our Cruise Connection series... Can’t wait to see you all in print!

CRUISE CONNECTION ... by JO MARY

Hello Fellow Cruisers,

Diana asked me to write something for the blog, so here goes.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jo Mary Murphy. I am retired from the City of Irvine, Community Service Dept. I worked at City Hall for 15 years.  I think I’ve known Diana for 19 + years. Roger worked on the third floor of City Hall and though I knew his name I never met him until the Med Cruise.

My husband Mike and I love to travel so when Diana approached us about the Mediterranean Cruise 6 years ago we jumped at the chance to be part of her travel group. We have been to Europe before but not to any of the cities on that cruise. This was something we had always wanted to do. The trip was two years in the making and it’s been almost four years ago since we flew to Barcelona.  What an amazing adventure we all had, all 60 plus of us. Mike and I met so many new friends and I got to spend time with my friends from the City. One of the best parts of the day for us was dinner where everyone came together and discussed what they did that day. Not everyone goes on the same excursions so it was great to hear about the things we missed. Unfortunately we can’t “do it all” as they say.

Now we get to do it all over again with the Asian Cruise. We can’t wait!!!!!

For you new cruisers, being with a large group has its perks. Familiar faces in a foreign country for one. Or being able to join a group of friends on an excursion, or just going off on your own. Having drinks before dinner or lunch with old and new friends. It’s all up to you. If you just want some alone time to relax, you’ve got it. Also, you don’t need to pack a lot since the ship has laundry service. It’s well worth the extra fee.

This will be our 5th cruise, first time on Princess and second time with Diana and Roger. Our other cruises were with groups of friends, some large and some small. We have always had a wonderful time.  So if some of you are still trying to decide whether to go, just do it. You won’t regret it.

Mike and I hope to travel again in the future on one of Diana and Roger’s famous cruises. We are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones on this Asian Cruise.

Bon Voyage,

Jo Mary

Create Your Personal Packing List

One could easily create your own packing list by simply planning to dump in the corner of your room all the items you want to take and then hopefully eliminating a third to half and then make a list as you pack.

OR you could also check out these website and print up a copy and since we still have plenty of time. Take the initiative by making a list so you don’t forget anything? Either way, just be sure you make a list of all your items so you have it for insurance purposes (hopefully you chose to opt for that) and also if the credit card you used for your air fare may cover baggage? Worth a phone call...

Below are a sampling of website links that I came across for packing lists. See what works for you.....

Choosing the Right Luggage

Where do you even begin when you are picking out new luggage? This is the next step in what Roger and I are tackling. Most recently, we made a visit to an independent luggage store called Peninsula Luggage in the Tustin Marketplace. Roger and I have bought luggage here before and have had helpful success in getting questions answered and also getting some hands-on, real look at some actual types of luggages. There are other sources of course, including Department Stores such as Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Discount Outlets such as Premium Outlets and TJ Maxx/Marshalls,  Speciality Stores such as Travel or Outdoors focus, including Magellan or REI, On-Line Website Sources, Amazon, Zappos, EBay, Overstock, LuggageShow Room,eBags, tibesti and the list goes on and on.

With our trip being overseas, We knew that we had to begin with our luggage allowance with the airline carrier we chose . Because we opt to travel business class, our particular airline allowed two checked baggage per person and obviously carry-on. But, this may not be the case for all.

Do your homework, so you won’t get caught in the hard sell of the sales person trying to meet their nomination to be Employee of the Month. So let’s start by listing some homework suggestions, before you head out to actually go shopping.

  • Find out what is the allowable baggage on your airline. Number of allowable Luggage, Dimensions, Weight etc.

  • How many days do you need to pack for? 16 day cruise plus ? 32 day cruise plus?

  • How much do you want to spend on your luggage?

  • Know your Luggage options and what you need or want:
>Regular Suitcase
>Garment Suitcase
>Duffle Bags
>Carry-On - suitcase, bags, totes, satchels
>Toiletries bags
  >Accessories - tags, belts, hooks, money holders etc

  • Choice of Luggage options:
>Soft case vs Hard case
  >Regular weight or light weight
>Solid Colors vs Prints
>Number of Rollers
>Handles, interior or exterior
>Interior storage and compartments

  • Explore the websites and see the different brands and prices

Additionally below are some websites you can view to assist you in your knowledge of  luggage and baggage for your upcoming cruise.

TRAVEL BOOKS - Diana's Top Five

Enjoying the last of the lazy warm days of the season? Thought you might enjoy making a trip to Barnes & Nobles or checking out on-line with Amazon.com for some reading materials for our trip. Fellow cruiser, Kelly asked me me what some of my favorite travel books were and so here are my go to Top Five choices, particularly for this getaway!

Number # 1
DK EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE
When taking a cruise and time is limited to a day in port. DK Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guide works well. It's concise and focused. Just explore by City or Country or Region
and you should be on your way to your destination.

Number # 2
DK EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE
This is a the go to book if you want more details then the Top Ten. Again I enjoy the DK Eyewitness series because it's focused not always wordy and has quick points of interests and information which is helpful. Plus the photos are generally a great quality. Be sure to check this out, as the book itself is kinda heavy due to the quality and heavier paper stock. Do keep this in mind if you plan to take it with you.

Number #3
LONELY PLANET
Is very detail and what I can describe as a "adventuresome" travel book. I know my girlfriend Stella uses this book quite a lot for her planning resource prior to trips. Note that if culture, history, traditions and nature is your focus this resource may be of interests.

Number #4
FROMMER's & FODOR's
In my opinion, these two books are what I consider the standard travel books. More like a travel encyclopedia. Lots of details and specifics. But, for me personally these books can be noted for updates and revisions. So be sure you check for the most current publications.

Number #5
INTERNET
With access to the world wide web, how can you not list this as a travel resource. Just plan to have plenty of time as you can find yourself lost in hours of explorations drilling into links after links.  Another new territory that I have not explored is the Apps world for your mobile device. Perhaps someone out there can offer their expertise and recommendation?

Easily Misunderstood Abroad

etiquette |ˈetikit, -ˌket| , noun
the customary code of polite behavior in society
or among members of a particular profession or group.
As a kid, our parents hopefully  taught us this important life lesson about manners. We learned to be polite, pay attention, be gracious, kind, considerate. We learned to shake hands and say “please and thank you”. It seems simple, doesn’t it? And it is here in America because it’s what is familiar to us. But now, what about the countries we will be visiting. In Asia, is it all the same? Is Thai the same as China or Japan or Korea? Then what about Singapore Malaysia where there are three major different cultures Chinese, Malay and Indian as in India, oh my!
The term “Ugly American” derives from the 1958 political novel of the same title by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer as well as a 1963 Movie starring Marlon Brando. “The Ugly American”, is fiction based on reality, alluding to Americans losing political presence in Southeast Asia because of their failure to understand local culture. The novel quotes a Burmese character as saying,
For some reason, the [American] people I meet in my country are not the same as the ones I knew in the United States. A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They’re loud and ostentatious.
As best shared by my Japanese cousin on a past visit to Tokyo, he said “...of course we don’t expect you to know all of the customs, culture and ways of Japan as a tourist...”
But I still couldn’t help think that I certainly did not want to be THAT Ugly American!
My cousin is right. We as tourists, aren’t expected to know everything, but I also don’t believe we need to be ignorant and not aware either. With a little effort, preparation and lessons from our parents we don’t have to be Ugly Americans.
Let me leave you with this final quote:
“Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you, not because they are
nice, but because you are...”     Unknown

So following are quite a few links to help you explore and prepare to create a better "International Relations" as you sightsee, dine, and shop in our various visiting ports of call.
